Misc. Stuff

I called Bingham's on Friday to get an ETA for the shoes. They shipped from the distribution center Thursday and should arrive in the store Monday. It still seems funny to me that it takes a few days for items to travel 15 miles. The FSA reimbursement I faxed in Wednesday hit my account yesterday so the shoes are paid for before I've even had a chance to use them! This is our first year with National Benefit Services and so far I'm impressed. Now I'm debating whether or not to get a new pair of pedals. My Time Impact Mags are a couple of years old and the new RXS Carbons look nice for not too much $. I probably should have kept the Speedplay's I won and given them a try. However, during my bike fit with Dr. Testa I asked what pedals were the best for knees and he said that his choice was Look followed by Time. He likes the large contact area and ability to limit (or eliminate) float that Look and Time offer. In his opinion, the rounded shape of Speedplays facilitates side-to-side rocking on the pedal when you ride hard. This isn't a problem for rec riders he said, but it could cause problems for those who race. Given that, Speedplays have been around for a long time and are used by all types of riders with no reported issues. Max did say that he's worked with Looks more than any other pedal so it may be a case of personal preference and familiarity with a particular product. Me, I'll probably stick with Time for the same reason.

In terms of riding, I've been trying to mix up the trainer sessions a bit by emphasizing higher cadence and intensity this week. Uhl mentioned that he did two 10 minute intervals consisting of 15 seconds high intensity followed by 15 seconds of recovery. I tweaked it a bit on Wednesday and did a single 15 minute interval of 30 seconds high intensity followed by 30 seconds recovery. Today I did 8x1 minute intervals at high intensity with 30 seconds of recovery between each effort. This one hurt pretty bad and I only did 1 set!

I didn't ride Thursday because I had a dermatofibroma removed from my right calf. The doctor told me it was really nothing to worry about but if I wanted it taken out it was easy to do. I said sure, why not and had it cut out. Bart will probably laugh that I had the area numbed as part of the procedure since he would have probably done everything himself in his living room with no pain killers! Yes, I'll admit to being somewhat of a wimp when it comes to knives and stitches.

Since I've already admitted to being a wimp I suppose it isn't a big surprise to learn that I'm not a huge fan of the current weather pattern in SLC. I envy all of you that are headed south (or west in the case of RB) to escape the cold. Me, I'll be back in Phoenix sometime next month. I can't wait...

So *how* did you get your FSA to pay for cycling shoes?!

I had a prescription! :)

It may sound crazy but it's actually legit. My right knee tracks inward when I pedal which when left uncorrect causes problems. To address this Dr. Testa added a LeWedge under my cleat. Problem is, my current shoes are going on 4 years old and are pretty beat up. So, when I had an ultrasound done on my knee a few weeks ago I asked if I could have a prescription for a pair of Specialized S-Works road shoes. Specialized builds a 1.5mm varus wedge into the sole of their shoes which functions the same as my current LeWedge. With a doctor's prescription pretty much anything is fair game for reimbursement under an FSA.

I got a set of RXS Carbons last summer and I've been really happy with them. I like the larger surface area, it does keep the side-to-side rocking down and it just feels better to have a larger contact area on the pedal.
