Starting back gives your lungs a pile of dust, and while you are waiting for the guy in front of you to clip in, the leaders are making time in fresh air. Then when you finally get collected, you have to use too much energy to pass. Start at (or as close as you can) the front, and let the shake out put you where you belong.

Glad you made it out (unlike me).Eat Sleep MTBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08010728639503304412noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1542065742758690684.post-2596925858973615062008-04-16T10:11:00.000-06:002008-04-16T10:11:00.000-06:00Good point. That said, races that don't have much passing it's more crucial to start out front because you can get stuck behind slower racers.KanyonKrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01954169751206336705noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1542065742758690684.post-75583763463229978482008-04-16T09:17:00.000-06:002008-04-16T09:17:00.000-06:00Well, my hope is to be able to stay at the front. ...Well, my hope is to be able to stay at the front. Otherwise, what's the point of racing if not to improve? Right now I'm not strong enough to give guys a 30 second advantage in the first quarter mile and expect to catch up. So, anything I can do to minimize the damage seems like a good thing in my opinion.UtRiderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16196214593560383672noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1542065742758690684.post-65407324776833005582008-04-15T21:21:00.000-06:002008-04-15T21:21:00.000-06:00I don't think lining up at the front makes much di...I don't think lining up at the front makes much difference unless you can stay out front. I've been up front before and didn't like having to let so many racers pass. I'd rather start at the back and have lots of carrots ahead for me to reel in - I think I actually go faster from the back for MTB races.KanyonKrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01954169751206336705noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1542065742758690684.post-88982788839379176812008-04-15T18:53:00.000-06:002008-04-15T18:53:00.000-06:00Even from the distance you look (in)tense.Even from the distance you look (in)tense.Piotrekhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02816092014423881376noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1542065742758690684.post-69909909187609118342008-04-14T12:56:00.000-06:002008-04-14T12:56:00.000-06:00Brad - Thanks for the kind words. I only used about half of my water but emptied both bottles. I also had a gel flask that I had dilluted. The taste of the gel was pretty gross and didn't sit well (that's what I get for trying something new on race day).UtRiderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16196214593560383672noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1542065742758690684.post-4828251242741205482008-04-14T12:46:00.000-06:002008-04-14T12:46:00.000-06:00Congrats on movin' up. Great job finishing! It was a hard course for one lap, I didn't have the courage to sign up for two for my first ride of the season.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
